NIOSH Releases Revised Method for Asbestos Analysis
Updated: Aug 23, 2019
The American Industrial Hygiene Association recently posted an article that elaborates on the change made for Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) NIOSH 7400 Method in June of 2019. Overall, the main change to the method is the substitution of triacetin/acetone liquids for Euparal and dimethylfomamide instead. This change will allow the same materials to be seen by the method, but the advantage of the modification is that the new chemicals (Euparal and dimethylfomamide) do not allow collected material from the filter paper to move around. This was a common problem in the past if too much triacetin was used (from the original way to prepare slides). The new method is outlined in the June 14 addition of NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods but either way is still acceptable to use. Read more here.
